Dr Mark Blandy
While working as a general dentist Mark developed an interest in orthodontics and commenced a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics where he gained the skills necessary to improve patient smiles and become a registered specialist orthodontist.
He has been awarded membership to the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and is currently a member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists and Australian Orthodontic Board.
Dr Blandy prides himself on being able to offer high quality yet affordable orthodontics to all age groups and periodically visits both Tully and Weipa to help provide specialty services to more remote regions of Far North Queensland and Cape York.
Currently, some general dentists across Australia are offering patients specialised Orthodontic treatments performed in-house rather than referring them to registered Orthodontists. What’s the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?
An orthodontist is a dentist who has become a registered specialist in orthodontics (in much the same way that a cardiologist is a doctor who has become a specialist in heart problems). In Australia, to be considered an Orthodontist, a professional must be registered as a Specialist in Orthodontics by the Federal Dental Board (AHPRA).
Dentists
- Have a general dental degree and is a dental health expert
- Diagnose and treat diseases of teeth, gums and mouth
- Provide general dental care for all ages
Orthodontists
- Have an additional three years of university training, on top of their general dental degree
- Are experts in facial growth and development, biology and biomechanics
- Diagnose and treat crooked teeth, bad bites and poorly aligned jaws
